About

Professor Richard Cooke was appointed as Professor of Health Psychology by Staffordshire University in January 2022. His primary research interests focus on better understanding motivation to drink alcohol. He has conducted studies using a range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies to (1) test the ability of psychological theories predict drinking behaviour, (2) explore how people interpret drinking guidelines, messages, and policies, and (3) systematically review the evidence for psychological theories as predictors of consumption and psychologically-informed interventions to reduce consumption. He acted as lead editor of The Palgrave Handbook of Psychological Perspectives on Alcohol Consumption. Richard also has extensive experience of designing and evaluating health interventions for patient populations. Beginning with an NHS-funded project on the Health Checks programme that sought to capture the experiences of healthcare professionals and patients, he has worked on systematic reviews of frailty
